What is a composite filling?

A composite filling is a tooth colored filling that is used to cover a tooth that has decay or a crack/fracture. The composite filling serves to fill the decayed or affected area of the tooth.

Composite fillings are the most widely used options alongside silver amalgam fillings, to address these types of issues. The benefit to composite fillings in particular is that they are closely matched to the color of your teeth, and therefore, work well for areas that are externally visible. Composite fillings are not a permanent solution, but are durable and last many years before having to be replaced.

Reasons for getting composite fillings:

·       Chipped teeth that need to be filled out to match the original tooth shape

·       Closing a space or gap between two individual teeth

·       Cracked or broken teeth that need to be repaired

·       Decayed or worn teeth that need to be filled out

How are composite fillings usually placed?

Getting a composite filling will usually only require a single appointment. We will initially numb your tooth, then remove the decay, clean the affected tooth, and apply the composite. If the area where the composite is placed is near a nerve, additional medication will be applied for added protection and comfort. Once the composite is applied, we will then precisely shape and polish it to match the texture of the rest of your tooth.

After a filling is placed, you may have increased sensitivity to hot and cold, but this will subside once your tooth adjusts to the filling. We will also offer you care instructions for your tooth, and suggest regularly cleaning your teeth, undertaking certain eating habits, and scheduling regular visits to the dentist so we can check on the status of the filling.
