What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed device that serves as a means of replacing missing teeth. The traditional bridge is the most popular type of dental bridge and is comprised of porcelain fused to metal. The traditional bridge includes two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth that attach to two artificial teeth that fill the gap of your missing teeth. Dental bridges will last many years, but may need replacement due to normal wear.

Reasons for getting a fixed bridge:

  • Fill the space of missing teeth
  • Maintain natural facial shape
  • Prevent your current teeth from moving out of their natural positioning
  • Restore the ability to chew or speak
  • Restore your natural smile
  • Upgrade from a removable denture to a permanent dental device

What does getting a fixed bridge involve?

When you get a fixed dental bridge, the procedure is typically broken down into two separate appointments. In the first appointment, your teeth are numbed, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of the enamel to place a crown, and an impression (mold) is made for the bridge, which is sent to the lab to be created. You are provided a temporary bridge to wear until your next appointment.

During the second appointment, we fit the permanent bridge to your teeth, making sure that it is adjusted and cemented for just the right fit. We may occasionally temporarily cement the bridge so that your teeth and tissue have time to get used to the new bridge, and then permanently cement it later on. After your appointment, we will suggest proper care for your bridge, which typically includes brushing, flossing, and regular dentist visits to ensure the longevity of your new bridge.
